Echinocereus polyacanthus matthesianus *2^ n. of Mexiko City, MEX to California, Utah, Wyoming, South Dacota, USA

|6-10 cm Ø|6-10 cm ↑|E. polyacanthus matthesianus is a particularly attractive form and its name honors the passionate cactus collector Richard Matthes from the Ore Mountains. The plant impresses with its robustness and the beautiful, bright orange-red flowers. The light green shoots are often covered in a light red tone and have numerous yellowish thorns with dark tips. In spring, the matthesianus unfolds its magnificent flowers - a real eye-catcher! The plant is very cold-tolerant and can tolerate temperatures of -10 to -15°C as long as it is dry. However, permanent frost should be avoided. In nature, the species lives on rocky slopes in light forests and often forms dense groups. The plant can also be a real eye-catcher in the garden or on the terrace. For optimal care, a sunny location and well-drained substrate are helpful. Water regularly but moderately, and waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. Naming the plant after Richard Matthes is a nice recognition for his many years of commitment and passion for cacti. The honor includes his equally active son Dieter Matthes and his family, who lovingly cared for and expanded Germanys oldest private cactus collection with a wise hand until 2024.
